New Music Friday: Laura Nickel & SoulChess

Welcome to this week’s New Music Friday playlist, we’re happy to be featuring Laura Nickel and SoulChess!

If you need an excuse to cry or feel nostalgic today, turn on Laura Nickel’s ‘Dusty Houses’! Inspired by her own childhood nostalgia and her time with her grandparents, Laura’s poetic writing will leave you grasping for the tissues and a time in your life you can still feel but somehow can’t quite touch. Filled with distant recordings of what can only be presumed is story time with her own grandfather and lines like, “Driving past every highway, windows down/ Now I only do that to drown out the sound/ Of missing you, spinning in your room/ It's faded since when you were here”, she transports the listener back in time while simultaneously keeping her loved ones alive in spirit and in song. Cozy up with your favorite memories and turn ‘Dusty Houses’ on while you reminisce.

Nostalgia is the theme this week! Closing out the playlist is ‘All The Things That We Can Be’ by SoulChess. You may have caught their episode with Caitie on Paradox Jukebox earlier this week—there they went into depth on this single, and how they navigate their way through the Nashville music scene with their eclectic sound. According to Chris, “I feel like that song really was about everything set for us just to go forward into the future. Everything else is behind us. So, it's a kind of an uplifting song about looking behind you but forward for the future but looking back with nostalgia.” Musically, it has a sunny disposition and a driving energy, leaving the listener with a love for what was and expectant hope for what’s ahead! Go forth and prosper, and turn up ‘All The Things That We Can Be’ on your way!
