Writing for Songfinch, with Music on The Move Alum April Kry

One of the coolest things about the Music on The Move community is that most of our showcase alums are full-time musicians. However, they aren’t all doing it the same way!

We caught up with April Kry, an incredible singer, songwriter, vocalist, and Mom. April is not only gigging, writing, and releasing new music like the rest of us, but she’s also writing custom songs for people through the platform, Songfinch! See what she has to say about the experience below!

April: Initially, I was very hesitant when this seemingly new company called Songfinch reached out to me. They hire artists, songwriters, and producers to create custom songs for people. There was sort of this underground group of artists that did it here in Nashville, and I had no idea until I started asking around.

I knew the basics of producing a demo. Up until that point of them contacting me, I had only used GarageBand at the time and had a mediocre microphone. I didn’t think I would have the production chops to fit what they needed. After talking to a couple friends in town who had started writing for them, I heard amazing things. So, I decided to give it a try!

I’m so happy I stepped out of my comfort zone and did it! Not only has Songfinch helped me develop my songwriting and production skills, but I can do it on my own time, which was vital for me as a first-time, stay-at-home-mom.

The turnaround time for a song is four days. At the moment, I’m writing about 3-4 songs a week, at a rate of $100 a song. Not bad for a stay at home mom who needs extra income! 3-4 songs is usually as much as I can take on, between motherhood and balancing my artist career.

Songfinch has helped me in so many ways, but my favorite is how it allows me to have a creative outlet, while generating an income at the same time. I can literally write and record a song while my son takes a nap!

It typically takes me about two hours to fully write and record a song, depending on whether I’m creating the track from scratch or not. Songfinch allows artists to reuse tracks, as long as the lyrics are all different. I probably have around 10 or more rotating tracks, but I like creating scratch ones often to keep it fresh.

I truly love writing for Songfinch and hearing everyone’s stories. Whether it’s a wedding, birthday, anniversary, or something else, they are all so very special, and I try to include as many little details as I can.

If you’d like to request a song, April’s profile can be found right here. If she is at capacity that day, she is usually free within the following day, so keep checking back for her availability!
