Music Minute Monday: Vocal Care for the Booked & Busy

We’re BOOKED & BUSY human beings, yes? ABSOLUTELY! So, when it comes to being a booked & busy boss vocalist, one of the most important things you can do for yourself is making sure you take care of your voice!

It’s the money maker, hunny!

But, while it’s important to warm up, it is entirely unrealistic to walk around with a piano everywhere you go. So, here are some helpful warm ups that will get the job done without having to lug around an extra instrument for your instrument.

  1. Lip Trills: An easy “low-impact” warm up that (mostly) everyone knows how to do. Purse your lips together and blow through them to make a “bbbb” sound (imagine a boat idling.) Go up and down the scale starting in your lower register and moving your way up. TIP: You don’t need to figure out what your entire register is during your warm ups! You don’t see Usain Bolt running the entire 100 M at his fastest before he competes do you?

  2. Open Vowels: Again, easy and simple. This will help you open up your mouth on an “Ah” or “Oh” (feel free to switch between them!) and get your jaw & tongue relaxed before you start to sing.

  3. “Neigh Neigh”: on a 1-3-5-8 pattern (Do Mi So Do for my solfège friends!) sing the word “Neigh” and make it as nasaly as possible to help warm up your mix.

  4. Big ‘ol sighs: Sighs are a great way to “stretch” your vocal folds between each warm up and to end your warm up routine!

No matter where you are, you can warm up your voice, keep it protected (never sing without warming up, or else the Head of HR Wally will temporarily revoke your pets pass) and stay booked, busy, and healthy!
