New Music Friday: Jess Wojo & Mikayla Lewis

Another week down, and we’ve got two new songs to feature on this week’s New Music Friday playlist!

Long distance romances generally get a bad rap; notorious for heartbreaking endings fueled by limited time spent with each other. Jess Wojo comes through this week with her single “LA Paradise”, delightfully challenging the status quo and provides a sunnier outlook of two people coming together despite the distance and soaking up every minute with joy. According to Wojo, “‘LA Paradise’ is a wistful but cheery love song based on the true story of two people in a long-distance relationship sharing a weekend in LA.” Closing out the song with a sweet voicemail exchange, Wojo could make even the snarkiest of skeptics (me) believe that love really can endure all.

Mikayla Lewis wraps up the playlist picks with her single “Cool Your Jets”, off her recently released self-titled debut album. With provocative, storytelling lyricism akin to that of (I dare say) early David Bowie, “Cool Your Jets” is filled with nuanced imagery, set to a bluesy, funk rock tune. With lines like, “she met her shadow in the valley/ evolves in the seven eleven alley” and “like the chip crumbs at the bottom of the bag/ he looks at his cig bummed and takes a drag”, Lewis writes so vividly, the listener could almost touch the scene at hand. Put this single on and get lost in someone else's story for a while!
